Journal #21. Why stress can make you more reactive

Why stress can make you more reactive

Most people recognise the pattern.

You are under pressure for too long. Sleep becomes lighter. Your mind feels crowded. Small frustrations start to feel bigger than they should. You become less patient, more easily irritated or quicker to react than usual.

That does not remove personal responsibility for how we treat other people. But it can help to understand what chronic stress does to the systems involved in attention, emotion and self-regulation.

Stress is not only a feeling. It is also a physiological response.

The brain’s stress response

When the brain detects a threat — whether that is physical danger, an overloaded inbox, financial pressure or conflict — it activates systems designed to help you respond.

In the short term, this is useful. Stress hormones increase alertness and help you act quickly.

The problem is when the stress response remains activated for too long.

The amygdala can become more reactive

The amygdala is involved in detecting threat and processing emotional information. Under chronic stress, it may become more sensitive to perceived danger, frustration or criticism.

This can make everyday situations feel more charged, increasing the likelihood of irritability, defensiveness or a strong emotional response.

The prefrontal cortex has less capacity

The prefrontal cortex supports planning, decision-making, impulse control and the ability to pause before reacting.

When you are exhausted or stressed for a prolonged period, those skills can feel less available. You may find it harder to think clearly, hold perspective or respond in the way you would prefer.

That is why people often describe feeling as though they are reacting before they have had time to choose a response.

Stress can affect sleep and recovery

Stress and sleep are closely connected. A busy mind, high levels of alertness and disrupted routines can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Poor sleep then reduces emotional regulation, concentration and stress tolerance the following day. This can create a cycle: more stress, poorer sleep, less capacity to cope and greater reactivity.

The wider body matters too

Researchers are also exploring how chronic stress interacts with immune activity and inflammatory processes. This is a complex area, and it is not possible to diagnose “brain inflammation” from feeling stressed, tired or irritable.

What is clear is that prolonged stress can affect multiple systems at once — mood, sleep, attention, energy and physical health. That is why a whole-of-life approach is often more useful than looking for one explanation.

Notice the early signals

Irritability, racing thoughts, poor sleep, mental fatigue and difficulty concentrating can be useful prompts to check in with yourself.

They may be a sign that your current load is not sustainable, or that you need more recovery, support or a change in routine. They are not a reason to judge yourself. They are information.

If stress, anxiety, low mood or changes in behaviour are persistent or affecting daily life, it is worth speaking with a GP, psychologist, counsellor or qualified health professional.

Build more capacity before you need it

You cannot always control what happens around you. You can build habits that support how your brain and body respond.

  • Protect a consistent sleep routine
  • Move regularly, even if it is only a short walk
  • Create breaks between demanding tasks
  • Use breathing, mindfulness or time outdoors to downshift
  • Eat regularly and include a broad range of whole foods
  • Talk with someone you trust before stress becomes overwhelming
  • Set boundaries around work, screens and constant availability

The goal is not to remove all stress. It is to create more room to respond with clarity when stress arrives.
