We all know that fruit and vegetables are good for us. They provide fibre, vitamins, minerals and a wide range of naturally occurring plant compounds that support overall health.

It would be too simplistic to say that modern fruit and vegetables are no longer beneficial. They remain an essential part of a healthy diet. But it is reasonable to recognise that food is complex, and the plant chemistry in a supermarket apple or orange may not be identical to that of another variety grown in different conditions.

The practical response is not to chase a perfect food supply. It is to eat a broad range of colourful plants, choose minimally processed foods where possible and include herbs, spices, tea, cacao, legumes, fruit and vegetables regularly.
