Convenience foods are part of modern life. A packaged snack, takeaway meal or busy-week shortcut does not determine your health.

The issue is the overall pattern.

When ultra-processed foods make up a large share of your diet, they can crowd out the foods that provide fibre, protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds that support the brain and body over time.

One widely reported study following adults over several years found that people with the highest intake of ultra-processed foods experienced faster decline on some cognitive measures. That does not prove ultra-processed foods directly caused the decline. You do not need to overhaul your kitchen overnight. Start with one or two easy swaps.

  • Choose porridge, eggs or plain yoghurt with fruit instead of highly sweetened breakfast options.
  • Keep fruit, nuts, hummus, boiled eggs or cheese available for quick snacks.
  • Use frozen vegetables, tinned beans, canned fish and pre-cooked grains to make meals easier.
  • Batch-cook one or two meals each week so convenience does not always mean takeaway.
  • Check sauces, drinks and snack foods for added sugar rather than assuming they are harmless.
  • Build meals around protein, fibre and colourful plants to support steadier energy.
  • Aim for progress, not restriction. A diet you can sustain is more valuable than a short-lived reset.
